When Should I Hire More Employees?

As would be expected, your SME is going to need to hire more employees to continue in success. Given recent economic struggles, hiring has become somewhat of a tentative matter. Many a time when recruiting a new member it has costed companies a lot in expense and time, but picking up the right person at the right time will see your company grow much more efficiently.

When asking yourself “When should I hire more employees?”, ensuring you achieve the perfect balance can be a tough nut to crack. You don’t have to just ask yourself that one question, read below and give yourself plenty more to answer to, to help you accurately determine whether picking up a new member of staff is the right choice for you.

Do you have the money?

Now this may seem like a bit of an obvious one, but we’re not just referring to salary within this. Typically when hiring your first couple of employees you’re not going to be able to pay out for someone who is already qualified in what you need them to do. More often than not, it’s in your best interests to train a Junior and train them up to the skills you hired them for, so taking into account the time taken to train staff is of paramount importance.

Hiring a Junior is going to cause a hitch in short term productivity almost always, so thinking carefully whether you can afford to have a small dip in profits whilst your new employee becomes proficient enough in their job should be considered.

Are you dealing with too much work?

With every company comes a mountain of various duties to carry out. Unfortunately these need to be done, and can lead you away from the actual work that you should be on. Do you feel too much time is taken up from responding to customers/clients and not being able to work on the company’s next marketing plan (for example)? It might be time for a new face.

Is there space?

Hiring a new member could be quite the easy choice if you already have the capacity in your current location for it, but the majority will still be smaller locations. Acquiring new staff may pose a problem if you don’t even have the space to fit them. Working remotely of course is an effective manner to combat this, but if you’re planning on hiring a junior this is far from ideal when it comes to appropriately training them for their job.

How is your growth measured?

Do you see a consistent climb within your growth, or are there certain periods that spike demands for your product/services? If you’re the latter it may be best to stick to having a few temporary workers for when the need arises. Picking up a permanent employee may leave them not much to do throughout the other periods of the year, keeping you at a loss. If you’re seeing a steady level of growth then getting someone permanently in will be the best choice.

Where will you be in a year?

Knowing where you’re headed, even in a general sense will greatly help you toward determining the need for an employee. Allow yourself to question whether hiring another person helps your company reach where it wants to be next year, and what kind of employee will help you get there?

Ask yourself these questions time and time again when it comes to thinking about hiring another member for your team. You can never be too cautious and with the points outlined above, we’re sure you’ll end up at the right decision!
