The Trustmark and Why it Matters

When it comes to setting up your own e-commerce business, one of your most vital assets will be trustmarks. Over the years of online shopping, it has become a common process by many to ensure that, when buying from small or new places, they are buying from somewhere secure. Before we continue, let’s explain on what exactly trustmarks are.

What is a trustmark?

A trustmark is essentially a small logo, that verifies your website and transactions as secure. These logos are most well known from McAfee, Norton(Symantec), Paypal and a number of others. The trustmark further signifies that your website has a daily scan from thousands of different viruses/malware and such to ensure the utmost security. Although as simple as it sounds, something as small as a logo on the screen can convert an astonishingly higher rate of completed sales. A frighteningly high amount of users tend to abandon their shopping cart just before payment because of a security worry.

What does a trustmark mean for my website?

As online shopping has progressed in the years, many more users have become far more familiarised in their nature with trustmarks as a standard for having a secured and safe to purchase from website. For example, the norton trustmark seal is seen approximately a billion times per day in around 170 countries, which just goes to show how much recognition you can achieve from a trusted brands trustmark. Taking the numbers from Norton, 90% of their respondents were likely to continue an online purchase when they viewed the Norton Secured Seal.

Taking from this, a high number of the trust seals around are owned by popular and well known anti-virus or pre-existing security software brands such as the aforementioned Norton and McAfee. Acquiring a trust mark, from an already well recognised brand, will help increase positive recognition with your website. When someone has had a good experience or has used products from one of these companies, they will feel much more secure and happy with completing their purchase with your website through association.

What else can be done to help?

There are plenty of other similar methods you can do to help increase conversions, along with generating positive association to your brand/website. For example, you need to display all of the payment processes that you currently provide (e.g. VISA/PayPal/BACS etc). This in turn strengthens the confidence customers have with you when it comes to making their purchase.

In addition you can also pick up an SSL certificate for your company’s website that will display directly to the left of the search bar with a padlock, a universal sign that we all know as being a safe page to visit online.

Ensuring you complete your sales is all about a positive, and secure feeling. With a trustmark on show this process becomes far easier to manage, and without one, you could be at the risk of losing many unnecessary conversions!
