Helping Others to See Your Business Vision

You may be passionate about your business vision and ready to stick with your venture until the bitter end… but do the people you work with feel the same way? As an entrepreneur, it can be easy to get wrapped up in your own mission while leaving business partners, employees, and clients behind. And that’s bad news, because the myriad responsibilities of your start-up can’t be weathered alone.

So how do you get others to not only understand your vision, but to go above and beyond to help you achieve it? As it turns out, it’s all about how you communicate it. Here are a few tips for getting others to love your vision as much (well, almost as much) as you do.business-vision

Explain how individual roles fit into the big picture. It can be incredibly frustrating to complete tasks day in and day out if you can’t see how your contribution is making a difference. Nobody likes busy work, and too much of it can lead to burn out and high employee turnover. Use metrics to help show individuals how they are truly helping the business reach its goals.

Be open to others’ input. You may like your vision exactly the way it is, but just as writers must commonly do with story ideas, you have to be prepared to “kill your darlings.” That doesn’t mean abandoning your vision altogether, but it does mean taking a step back to get a different perspective. By being open to others’ feedback and contributions to your vision, you’ll promote greater engagement and loyalty.

Show how your vision fits into the larger community. The people around you in your organisation will feel better about their work if they’re not just adding to the improvement of the business, but to the improvement of the community on some level as well. It’s obviously easier for non-profits to articulate a vision that involves giving back to the community, but for-profits can give back as well, whether it’s through committing to sustainable manufacturing or donating part of their profits to a charity. This kind of conscientiousness can help keep employees, customers, and clients on board with your business.

Make sure you’re not exploiting the people around you. The people you work with aren’t just working with you because they selflessly want to help you get ahead—if they’re truly going to support your vision, they need to see something in it for them as well. For some employees, this might mean a bonus or a raise when your business does well, but for others, it might simply mean opportunities for professional development, input with the product and marketing strategies, and recognition of their contributions. Make the people around you feel appreciated and show them how they can benefit from your vision.

Helping others understand your business vision is about much more than just giving a stirring speech. You’ll need to continue working closely with everyone involved in your vision to make sure that they continue to feel satisfied with their contributions and motivated to keep pushing your vision forward.
