Guerrilla Marketing – The Right Place at the Right Time!

Guerrilla Marketing is a very unique, hit and miss advertising method that seems to be all about making the right impact at the right time, and that can end up being quite the challenge of knowing when to utilise it. Keeping a keen eye out for any new developments in terms of news or industry will always provide a good indication of when the time is right.

Royal Caribbean have recently used such an event to their greatest advantage and marketed fantastically themselves through this opportunity!

We’re sure by now you may have heard about the hilariously ridiculous online vote to name the Natural Environment Research Council’s newest vessel, having recently stormed the internet. An obvious oversight to the internet’s capability, the silly names have come out and the top choice “Boaty McBoatface” has surged ahead of the votes and it’s not even close honestly… But what does this have to do with Royal Caribbean?

Well the gentleman who came up with the name, James Hand, has been invited by Royal Caribbean to not only have a free cruise but to name their new ship as well! (Probably in the event that NERC won’t be too happy with actually naming their vessel with the aforementioned…) They even made a picture to show the name “Boaty McBoatface” plastered across the back of one of their cruise ships.

A Small Investment for a Huge Return!

This is the kind of marketing that not only does literally no harm, but costs pennies to reap massive rewards for the future of your company. Royal Caribbean clearly knew when to seize the moment and take this hilarious catastrophe for one company into a fantastic opportunity for themselves. Now, news websites are reporting across many countries about this story and generating huge exposure for what would cost Royal Caribbean near to nothing for the scale of their operations.

royal-caribbeanHaving not only given to prospective customers a sense of relatable humour, the cruise company have been able to show themselves as a giving company… Bringing two incredibly important points into one easy-to-relate brand impression that is sure to resonate with plenty of readers! It’s not the first time they’ve employed a name our ship tactic but not with so much virality and humour beforehand.

Royal Caribbean has a textbook example of being in the right place at the right time, using their company’s industry to it’s maximum advantage in order to generate a huge level of brand awareness and recognition for pennies! If you’re looking to do this yourself then don’t feel like it’s all about luck… You can tactically place yourself in these positions based on how you’re able to react and prepare to news and goings on within your industry and reap the rewards, much like Royal Caribbean have.
