What Can An App Do For My Business?

Since smartphones and tablets arrived on the market, they have exploded in popularity and now it’s hard to imagine a day that goes by where we haven’t them at some point in the day. Apps followed shortly after and have had a similar effect. They’re just so useful when it comes to ease of access and getting the information you want.

Considering over 1 billion devices were sold just last year its not exactly like theres any shortage of prospective users to target. This is why you might be asking yourself “What can an app do for my business?”

Now this is a pretty hard question to answer off the bat. However if you’re wondering what an app can do for my business you must have already thought of a number of varying apps that may be useful for you. Think of an app as an extension to the products and services that you have on offer. You can also go beyond your business and develop an app that assists users but doesn’t necessarily market products or services.

With all things considered how do we know what kind of apps are out there and what can they do for you? Well we can break it down into a few major points that may provide some insight to what you may be looking for:

1 – User Apps

“User apps” is a fairly generalised term but what I mean by it is a general app that actually provides some use for to users. For example a tool that makes things simpler for us in day to day life. Take for example Microsoft’s OneNote, a note taking app which acts as a digital PA and is cloud based too to boot. When I think of OneNote I instantly remember it’s Microsofts product and thats the sort of scope you want to look at when creating an app specifically to assist your users. You want to ensure that you can provide a service that is unique and can also promote your company through it’s recommendation and usefulness.

2 – App Catalogues

An app Catalogue would be useful for your company if you are selling goods, more and more people every day turn to their phones to shop on the go and having an app to host the catalogue of your company’s products would make an ideal app for you. However, and a big however… this doesn’t necessarily mean that your app will be successful. Provided that your website is mobile friendly and tested to be effective like this, then there really isn’t a need for an app, but bring more ease of use than the website can offer and you could have more people start to recommend this over other competing companies who don’t yet have apps.

3 – App Blogs/News

Taking note of the previously mentioned, mobile friendly blogs and news sites do succeed very well, but apps can generate better user experience, and they can view whatever it will be that you produce on the blog/news app.

All of these Apps don’t necessarily try and sell a product off the bat, but are more-so an extension of the products and services you offer.

Giving you more of an outlet to market your company gives a better opportunity to acquire more customers and clients. To make sure your app sticks though you need to ensure that it maters to your customers. Bringing something to the table that no one else currently has, gives your app that added value over others.

Also fitting into this category is magazines and newspapers in a digital format. A great example of these would be EVO’s app. An addition to the magazine subscription, it has a great user experience by being easy to read and navigate and great to bring with you to read on the commute. It stores all your previous additions too meaning you don’t have to lug around a bag full of magazines if you want to look back on something that interested you.

4 – Apps for Businesses

Be it internal for your business or an app that can assist other businesses, these apps can have a great effect on the productivity within companies. RetailOS is a good example to use here: it creates a tablet/mobile accessible tool of engagement through in-store shop employees, allowing for a wide use of abilities to assist them in their day to day jobs and plenty more which you can read about here. Creating such an app for your company or other businesses could be invaluable to success, but of course can require a lot of innovation and investment to create the perfect app.

With the current market there’s never a better time to see how you can develop your business to complement the devices we use every day. There’s only one way for apps as a whole to go and that way is up. With the evolution of technology theres really no telling how much they will become entwined in our daily lives, but its assured that they’ll be around for many years to come.
